Sustainable Business Network of Portland

Portland, Oregon

The Sustainable Business Network of Portland came together in 2003 with the initial goal of building a strong local network of community-based businesses, nonprofit organizations, and supportive individuals to foster a truly sustainable local economy in the Portland metropolitan area. Local coordinator Robyn Shanti, a dedicated board of directors, and an equally dedicated group of volunteers have since grown SBN Portland into one of BALLE’s largest West Coast networks. SBN Portland also hosted the first BALLE International Conference.

SBNP’s success has come in large part from a multi-year Think Local First campaign that began in November 2004. The first-year campaign succeeded in building a lot of public awareness. That success has translated into roughly 300 participating businesses, including restaurants, retail, and service providers. The campaign has also built strong alliances and featured additional events that increased the organization’s visibility in the community.

The goals of the Think Local First campaign:

  • Re-circulate more dollars in our community

  • Support and strengthen locally owned, independent businesses and jobs

  • Preserve and enhance our unique neighborhoods

Fall of 2005 saw the launch of the campaign's second year. In this phase, the network worked to educate the public about the benefits of keeping more money circulating in the local economy. It had a significant impact on where consumers spent their money during the holiday season: The network got individual shoppers to sign pledges committing a certain portion of their holiday dollars to Think Local First participating businesses and service providers.

With the effectiveness of Think Local First, SBN Portland is working to broaden its focus. They now have plans to develop programs to support the Health and Wellness, Energy, Transportation, and Community Capital sectors, crucial building blocks of a healthy local economy.
